Quicky Question

Mom is thinking about changing Big Foot's (Paris Rain's) dry kibble and wanted some advice from some great doggie owners such as yourselves. Miss Thing is forever licking her paws and word is that grain-free is the way to go. Mom did some research (when she was supposed to be working) and found a couple of brands were well-tolerated for itchy pooches: A Taste of the Wild and Blue Buffalo. Any body like these? Also, do any of you out there have any special products that have worked on (big) itchy dog foots? Mom says "THANKS!"

Sugars,
Macky

I kinda like the Blue Buffalo... wet foods. I have never tried the Dry stuffs. It takes me about 87 weeks to eat a bag of that stuffs. Well, it takes me 3 or 4 days to eat a regular sized can of wet foods too. hehehe
My mom says that years ago when Pretzel vonSchnitzel was with her.. she had to soak Pretzel's feets in a solution of 10% Clorox and warm water.
There is also some stuffs that you can get fur HOT SPOTS.

Mum has discussed dis issue with our vet and he doesn't agree dat da food always has to do withs itchy feet. Said it could be other things.
We is on da friggin Purina junk...no gourmet dog foods fur us...sigh. No wonder my sissy's coat looks so bad...hehehe!

Hey Mack!
Wow, I'm not really sure about that kibble question. I like Pedigree, but I'm not too picky. BTW: Love the video in your last post...I really like being in destruction mode too! BOL

We're no help Mack. We don't lick our paws so my mom has no experiences about the diet.
Happy New Year everyone!
We wish you a lovely good year filled with good health and good laugh and a special wish for Paris Rain soon quitting her licking business.
Cheers!

Me and Brudder Ranger luvs, luvs, LUVS the Taste of the Wild! Did I mention we LUVS it? A lot. Mom thinks our coats have gotten shinier since we've gone to the no-grain stuff AND - well, this might be a little pawsonal - but our poops are smaller, too. I dunno why mom gets excited about stuff like that but there ya go.

Well, we are a no-grain pack. We switched to EVO chicken and turkey when Phantom had his first cancer bout. We all eat it, and we like it (well, who knows if Phantom likes it?). Our coats are good and we don't have any itching issues. But that's just what works for us. Good luck with your search.

We have tried Taste of the Wild, and while the dogs loved it, it made for very stinky and very dark poopies. And lots of them.

I would try a salmon oil instead.

We are a no corn,no soy, no wheat pack. We have eaten Blackwood 5000, Blue Buffalo, Nature's something or other- chicken or salmon (fish). We are currently eating Petsmart brand Authority chicken. It's actually not bad as far as ingredients & much more affordable @ $29/ 40# bag. We have beautiful shiny coats & don't smell yeasty...helpful?

Hey Mack. I eat raw a lot but when I get kibble when mom is lazy it is Taste of the wild. No poop problems here and I like to leave big piles since I'm a big guy.

I was always itching my feet and now we eat Blue Buffalo Basics (or something) and it is super good and we like it and I don't itch my feet anymore.

ps- Shelby says it's super good if you put just a tad bit of warm water in the bowl with the food. Brings out the aroma! ;)

We eat Precise Brand...it's grain free and not as expensive as some brands...'cuz they don't advertise as much and the bag isn't as fancy. No more stinky ears since we went grain free. I think all of the brands mentioned are nummy.Good luck! Love, Josie

Hi! Abby also has the itchy feet [and the itchy butt] due to food allergies, so we're very interested in your research. She also has chronic pancreatitis, so that rules out a lot of foods with fat, like salmon. Right now she gets California Wellness senior [for the low fat] rice & chicken kibble, plus she gets organic cooked chicken mixed in with the kibble. Most of the time, that works pretty well for her. Mama also puts a dash of hot tap water in the kibble to help make it taste better. We also tried allergy shots, but they didn't make much difference to Abby. [They did make a HUGE difference to Jed, but his allergy was respiratory, not food-related]. Abby does take an anti-histimine [like Benadryl] and that seems to help, too. Good luck!

I've heard lots of good things about Blue Buffalo (I know I LOVE their treats!). We like EVO and Pinnacle here. Whatever you decide, I'm sorry to hear about your itchy paws! Ronnii and Richie's momma sent me the name of this soothing spray for when my face gets real itchy. I can find that bottle if you're interested!

Oks I know lots about this stuff from my own experiences. See I have an intollerance to chicken - goes right through me. So I have eaten lots of non-chicken based foods. Taste of the Wild pacific stream is indeed grain free. I did pretty well on it and ate it for 6 months. But, I didn't like the taste of it too much and without the grains I was losing lots of weight. So, I switched to Blue Buffalo Fish and Sweet Potato - has grains but no yucky fillers. I loved it and ate it for 6 months. Then Blue Buffalo came out with a large breed fish and oatmeal. So, I gradually switched over to that cause it has glucosamine in it. And I luvs it. The fishy oils and the oatmeal help your skin & furs!

Hope that helps, you can always contact the companies for samples too.

We are catching up on blogs~

Thanks for the kind words on Josie's postys~

I did a posty yesterday about our dog food solid gold..

I have not heard anything of those others you have mentioned..

My dogs have been itching non-stop so much so I thought it was fleas..
I even took them in..

Not fleas..

Just a really bad winter..
Dry skin..
My Mother-in-law suggested veg-oil, but my mom said NO WAY..

Anakin's stomach is senitive..
My vet recommended benadryl for their iches.

It's funny because I was thinking about changing their food..

I had Anakin's urine checked today..(I thought he had an infection) he didn't.. but his protein level was high..
a result of his food..
Not bad thing..
but it's amazing what food can do..
Please let me know if any of those foods help with iches..
on my blog or my e-mail..
thanks,

~Katy

Hello Mack! accidentally bump into your blog and I found your post is kinda interesting. Jasmine too has a problem of paws licking. On the day we bring her back home, all her paws was turn to red instead of white. Because I've been on raw diet ever since, mom tried to feed Jasmine with raw diet and it magically she stop licking on her paws. She's been on the diet for nearly 6 months and when recently mom feed her back with kibbles brand Artemis she gradually start to lick her paws again!!!

In just few weeks time, her front paws has turn into red color again.. currently mom is trying to see if Jasmine was allergic to the brand as she's intend to find a good kibbles for us as a backup when she has no time to prepare our raw meal.

But the brand that we could get her is not as wide as in your place I guess.. We've tried the Grain-free range called Now! but we're not sure if it can help Jasmine licking problem as well.

I hope we could both find a solution. In the mean time, you could try searching bout raw diet. It does help in many ways :)

and oh, nice to meet ya!

Love,
Autumn & Jasmine

Hello Mack! We are new to your blog and wanted to say Hi :) We are on Blue Buffalo dry food and we LOVE it. It's also very good for us (our vet is very happy with our diet) and our coats are very soft and shiny (everybody always says so). Owen has itchy feet sometimes, but we think it's seasonal allergies and will wait till next year to see if it happens again (the vet said it's likely seasonal since he's a beagle). Hope this helps :)

Just came across your blog from the Babyface Parade on PBU. Mack was quite the cute puppy!

We feed Oscar dry Blue Buffalo food. He's on the Small Breed Puppy Chicken and Oatmeal recipe. We switched him over from Iams. He absolutely loves it, and I noticed a change in his coat. I have heard others say that Blue Buffalo helped with itchy skin. I don't believe that they use any corn or soy in their recipes, which is probably what helps with that. I know they also have alternate recipes (like with duck and other less-used ingredients) for dogs with allergies. I highly recommend Blue Buffalo, based on my experience with it!

We root for Natura's Innova or Evo. Evo is much lower in starch and much richer, so some dogs do better on the Innova. We've also heard good things about Blue Buffalo. Remember that with grain-free foods you often feed less, since there are fewer fillers.

We also recommend canned over dry, since that naturally contains less starch, more meat and the protein is of a better quality (less cooking and drying). You can always mix the 2.

By the way... GREAT toy playing in your last post! Admirable, really.
